1947- Rockefeller Foundation Patents Zika Virus

In 1947, researchers from the Rockefeller Foundation put a rhesus monkey in a cage in the middle of the Zika Forest of Uganda. The team was conducting surveillance for yellow fever. But “Rhesus 766” would ultimately become the first known carrier of the Zika virus.

The Virus was patented under J. Casals, Rockefeller Foundation as Zika Virus (ATCC® VR-84).
